The Laps for Leadership event was a huge success thanks to the tremendous support of the Eagle Crest volunteers and staff! A special thank you goes out to this year’s committee chairs: Camille, Kate, and Mary Lynn. You are awesome, and we are very grateful for the time and hard work you put in to making this event a success. Also, thank you to Mr. G and Mrs. O for keeping everyone’s spirits up throughout the entire day. Your cheers and music inspired all the students to run long and strong!
The PTO chooses to help Eagle Crest by paying for many services and items throughout the school year including: buses for field trips, classroom paraprofessionals, scholarships, concerts, etc. Help us make Laps for Leadership a huge success by donating or pledging dollars-per-lap! Money is not due until September 30th. Here is our budget for this 2016-2017 school year.

Way to go Eagle Crest Eagles!
A Skype linkup between students at Eagle Crest Elementary School
and Empakasi School in Kenya had to be hurried on Monday morning,
as the nine-hour time difference meant that it was getting dark in Africa
and the children had to get home safely, with lions and rhinoceroses
getting close to the school.
That concern was a stark reminder of the differences in the lifestyles of the two sets of children, who were much the same in every other respect. The linkup between the sister schools saw the students sing songs to each other, offer greetings and ask (and answer) questions.

Dear Mwebaza Book Sale Volunteers and ECE Staff,
First of all, I want to sincerely thank each and every one of you for the role you played in making the annual Mwebaza Book Sale a huge success! We had a very active shopping crowd, especially for the first hour and a half, and they bought a lot of books! When all outstanding receipts come in, it looks like we will have made around $1360 this year. That's a lot of books sold considering that most were $.50 or $1.00! The total was not as much as we made last year when we set a record with $1700 in sales, but very comparable to what we have made in previous years.
Between book sorters, setter-uppers, cashiers, book and bead table supervisors, and packer-uppers, we covered every base and put together a smooth sale. Whatever role you played, thank you for your willingness to help!
Special thanks to volunteer extraordinaire, Kate Rauschkolb, who sorted and priced nearly all of the books. She literally touched and deliberated over thousands and thousands of books!
And truly, we couldn't put on this great community event without the help of our dedicated staff that are always so willing to put flyers in student mailboxes, allow us to use their tables, countertops, and pod space, and answer endless student questions about the sale. We are grateful to those of you who worked at the sale as well!
All profits from this year's Eagle Crest Elementary sale will be combined with any funds made at other ECE fundraisers for Empakasi. (Ready to scoop ice cream at Cold Stone in May?) The total will be applied towards a biogas system that will generate heat to cook the eggs being produced by the chickens purchased with last year’s “Buy-a-Chick” fundraiser funds. Biogas is an eco-friendly way to produce cooking fuel using… <gulp>… cow manure. Cow manure is in abundance in the Empakasi School community, but firewood, the traditional fuel for cooking, is not. Biogas is becoming quite common in Kenya.
We are happy to report that the children at Empakasi are eating the eggs produced by the 500 chickens being raised at the school! The vegetables in the greenhouse are growing and will also be added to the children’s diet. Eggs and vegetables gathered on the weekends and during holidays are being sold, with the profits being used to pay the cook, gardener, and poultry manager. The lunch program is well on its way to being completely self-sustaining.
Once again, thanks for your help and enthusiasm! Asante sane!
Amy D (Eagle Crest Teacher)
